Sparta: All Sparta males have to be soldiers, as a full time job. Singapore: All Singaporean males have to be soldier, as a full time job for 2 years. Sparta: Has Helots (slaves) to do their sai kang and Perioikio (people who live in Sparta but are not citizens) for skilled labour. This population group are larger than the Spartans themselves. Singapore: Has foreign workers to do their sai kang and foreign talent for skill labour. This population group is not larger than the Singaporeans themselves. Give it a few years. Sparta: Ruled by two kings from two families. Singapore: Oh... Wait. Sparta: Small country Singapore: Small country Sparta: Arrogant Singapore: Arrogant Sparta: Male Spartans began military training at age seven where they would enter the Agoge system. The Agoge was designed to encourage discipline and physical toughness and to emphasise the importance of the Spartan state. Boys lived in communal messes and were deliberately underfed, to encourage them to master the skill of stealing food. Besides physical and weapons training, boys studied reading, writing, music and dancing. Special punishments were imposed if boys failed to answer questions sufficiently 'laconically' (i.e. briefly and wittily).[57] At the age of twelve, the Agoge obliged Spartan boys to take an older male mentor, usually an unmarried young man. The older man was expected to function as a kind of substitute father and role model to his junior partner; however, it is also reasonably certain that they had sexual relations (the exact nature of Spartan pederasty is not entirely clear).[58] At the age of eighteen, Spartan boys became reserve members of the Spartan army. On leaving the Agoge they would be sorted into groups, whereupon some were sent into the countryside with only a knife and forced to survive on their skills and cunning. This was called the Krypteia, and the immediate object of it was to seek out and kill any helots as part of the larger program of terrorising and intimidating the helot population.[59] Less information is available about the education of Spartan girls, but they seem to have gone through a fairly extensive formal educational cycle, broadly similar to that of the boys but with less emphasis on military training. In this respect, classical Sparta was unique in ancient Greece. In no other city-state did women receive any kind of formal education. Singapore: Male Singaporeans began brain training at age four where they would enter the Singaporean Education system. The Singaporean Education system was designed to encourage comforming and textbook memorizing and to emphasise the importance of the Singaporean state. Students studied in communal classrooms and were deliberately spoonfed, to encourage them to master the skill of textbook memorizing. Besides exams and class tests, students studied P.E., Home Econs, music and sex education. Special punishments were imposed if students failed to wear their uniforms properly. At the age of twelve, the Singaporean Education system obliged Singaporean boys to move on to a secondary school, usually a prestigious and highly ranked secondary school. The secondary school was expected to function as a kind of substitute parent and concentration camp. At the age of eighteen, Singaporean boys became members of the Singapore army. On leaving the Singaporean Education system they would be sorted into different Combat Arms, whereupon all were sent into the countryside (Pulau Tekong) and forced to survive on their chao keng skills and taiji skills. This was called the BMT, and the immediate object of it was to teach clueless recruits military skills they would likely never use in their lives as part of the larger program of terrorising and intimidating the adult male population. Less information is available about the education of Spartan girls, but they seem to have gone through a fairly extensive formal educational cycle, broadly similar to that of the boys but with no military training. |
